Helen Spencer-Oatey is a retired Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick, UK. She specialises in intercultural communication, social pragmatics, and cross-cultural pedagogy. Her career spans roles at Shanghai Jiaotong University, the University of Luton (now the University of Bedfordshire), and leadership in the eChina-UK Programme. She is known for developing the Rapport Management Theory and co-founding the GlobalPAD initiative to enhance intercultural competence in education and business. Education & Career: Began teaching in Hong Kong and China before completing a PhD at Lancaster University. Established the UK’s first MA in Intercultural Communication at the University of Luton. Joined Warwick in 2007, focusing on global education partnerships and intercultural training. Research Interests: Interplay between language, culture, and social relations. Intercultural adaptation challenges for students and professionals. Evaluation processes in intercultural communication and their ethical implications. Publications: Over 100 articles and books, including Intercultural Politeness: Managing Relations Across Cultures (2021) and the Global Fitness for Global People framework. Recent work explores higher education internationalisation, team dynamics in multicultural settings, and the role of greetings in social integration. Grants & Projects: British Academy-funded research on intercultural adaptation in the construction industry (2015–2018). Developed the Global People Competency Framework for intercultural effectiveness in global partnerships. Labs/Teams: Co-leads the GlobalPAD initiative at Warwick, promoting intercultural competence through research and training programs.
