Professor Mark Hughes is a social work academic at Southern Cross University's Faculty of Health, where he previously held roles as Chair of Academic Board and Dean of Arts and Social Sciences. He also served as Editor of Australian Social Work and currently leads as Editor-in-Chief of the Australasian Journal on Ageing. His work focuses on ageing, LGBTQ+ health, and social work education, with a strong emphasis on improving aged care services and advocating for inclusive policies.
Professor Hughes holds a BSW (Hons) from James Cook University and a PhD from the University of Queensland. His research explores topics such as healthcare access for LGBTQ+ seniors, delirium management in acute care, and the impact of stigma on mental health. He leads initiatives like the MRFF-funded 'co-creating rainbow inclusive care' project and collaborates globally through the Global Pride Project.
His recent publications highlight themes of professional resilience in social work, caregiver experiences, and civic engagement among queer communities. He is a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts and actively contributes to policy discussions on ageing and diversity.
Key achievements include over 150 scholarly outputs, funded research programs, and advocacy for equitable aged care. His work bridges academia, policy, and practice to address systemic gaps in health and social services for marginalised groups.
