Brenda Hayanga

Dr Brenda Hayanga is a Presidential Research Fellow at the School of Health and Psychological Sciences, Department of Health Services Research and Management, City St George's, University of London. Her research focuses on the intersection of social, historical, and structural processes with individual factors to understand health outcomes in minoritised ethnic groups, particularly those with multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) in the UK.

Using an intersectional, life-course approach, Dr Hayanga examines ethnic inequalities in healthcare access and quality through quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research, including systematic reviews. Her 2024 studies highlighted disparities in primary care satisfaction among Arab, Bangladeshi, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, and mixed-ethnicity populations, with demographic, practice, and area-level factors variably influencing outcomes.

Key findings from her recent work include the amplification of ethnic inequalities in healthcare access after adjusting for structural factors, the role of ethnic density in shaping patient experiences, and the need for co-produced participatory interventions to improve MLTC outcomes. She serves on the editorial board of Sociology of Health & Illness (2022–present).
