John Adamson serves as a Professorial Research Fellow in Modern History and Fellow of Peterhouse at the University of Cambridge. He directs the Humanities Research Institute and chairs its Advisory Board. Born in Australia, he holds a First-Class Honours degree in Classics and History from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he studied as a Research Scholar at Christ’s College. His research focuses on 16th- and 17th-century British and European political and cultural history, with notable works including The Noble Revolt: The Overthrow of Charles I (2007), recognized by The Economist and London Review of Books . His scholarship has earned prestigious awards such as the Royal Historical Society’s Alexander Prize and the Seeley Medal. Current research projects include a new history of the Stuart Kingdoms’ civil wars, the career of Matthew Wren, Pieter Paul Rubens’ diplomatic activities, and the history of color in the 17th–18th centuries. He has held visiting roles at Yale University, UCLA, and the Aspen Institute, and serves on the editorial board of History Today . His work also extends to advising organizations like the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and the Weidenfeld Scholarships Programme at Oxford. Adamson’s academic contributions include editorial roles and frequent reviews for major publications like the London Review of Books and Times Literary Supplement . His interdisciplinary research bridges political, cultural, and art historical dimensions of early modern Europe.
