Anna Whitelock is a Professor of History at Royal Holloway, University of London, specializing in the history of monarchy. She holds positions in the Department of History and co-directs the Centre for the Study of Modern Monarchy. Her research focuses on monarchy, gender, and the Tudor/Stuart periods, with a particular interest in royal bodies, succession, and court politics.
Her major works include prize-winning books such as Mary Tudor: England’s First Queen (2009) and Elizabeth's Bedfellows (2013). She is currently completing a book on the Stuart succession and leads a major AHRC-funded project examining Queen Elizabeth II’s reign in the Caribbean. This project involves collaboration with institutions like the University of the West Indies and the Royal Collection.
Whitelock is a prominent media commentator on monarchy, appearing in TV documentaries and presenting BBC Radio 3’s Heritage Wars. She regularly contributes to public history initiatives and serves on advisory boards for educational and heritage organizations.
Her research has been supported by significant grants, including a 2021 AHRC award for the Visible Crown project (2021–2025). She has supervised four graduate students and co-edited influential volumes on Tudor queenship.
