Professor Susan Doran is a Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College and former Senior Research Fellow at St Benet’s Hall (closed 2022), both part of the University of Oxford's Faculty of History. She holds academic credentials including a BA from St Anne’s College, Oxford, a PhD, and fellowships from the Royal Historical Society and Historical Association. Her teaching focuses on Early Modern British and European History (1400-1700), with specialization in Elizabeth I’s reign and the transition to James I.
Her research examines Elizabethan political culture, succession crises, foreign diplomacy, and monarchical iconography. Recent work emphasizes the 1603 succession to James I, analyzing policy continuity and change through interdisciplinary analysis of political, literary, and visual sources. Current projects include revisiting Elizabeth I’s reign and a new book on Tudor-Stuart continuity.
