Professor Natalie Mears is a historian specializing in Early Modern British History at Durham University's Department of History. She holds a professorial position and is affiliated with the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Her research focuses on the representation of Elizabeth I in light of contemporary social movements like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter, Tudor/Stuart politics, and religious practices such as special worship. She has led major projects like the AHRC-funded 'British state prayers' initiative and edited volumes on national prayers and religious anniversaries.
Professor Mears holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (undergraduate), University of St Andrews (M.Litt and PhD), and has taught at multiple institutions before joining Durham in 2003. Her work bridges academia and public engagement, including collaborations with English Touring Opera and contributions to BBC programs. She advises graduate students on Tudor/Stuart topics and has developed educational materials with the National Archives.
Her current project, 'Exploding Elizabeth,' challenges traditional narratives by centering marginalized perspectives in Elizabeth I's historiography. She has also contributed to cultural projects like historical consultancy for TV series and public lectures through platforms like The Faculties and Massolit.
