Lucas Marchante-Aragón is an Associate Professor specializing in early modern Hispanic culture at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York (CUNY). His research centers on Hapsburg imperial politics, propaganda, and their intersections with gender, ethnicity, and nation-building, particularly as expressed through performance and literature. He earned his PhD in Romance Languages from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA from Villanova University, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Cádiz, Spain.
Dr. Marchante-Aragón’s research interests include early modern Hispanic culture, imperial masculinity, Morisco studies, chivalric literature, and the role of performance in constructing national identity. His work critically examines how power, gender, and ethnicity were negotiated in the Spanish Hapsburg Empire, with a particular focus on symbolic discourses of domination, forced marriage, and hybridity. He is currently studying the symbolic discourse of sexual domination and forced marriage in the Spanish Hapsburg Empire’s interactions with colonized cultures.
His recent publications reveal a consistent thematic focus on empire, performance, and identity in early modern Spain. Articles and his monograph explore topics such as the crisis of imperial masculinity in Don Quixote, the expulsion of the Moriscos as imperial spectacle, the ritualization of divine kingship in court festivals, and the construction of national origins through chivalric reenactment. His scholarly output spans prestigious journals in medieval and early modern studies, demonstrating a deep engagement with interdisciplinary approaches to Hispanic cultural history.
Dr. Marchante-Aragón is the author of the monograph Performing the King Divine: The Early Modern Spanish Aulic Festival (2017) and co-editor of Cultural Connections in the Hispanic World (2023). He has published in journals including Viator, Journal of Early Modern Cultural Studies, Nueva Revista de Filología Hispánica, Hispanófila, and Analecta Malacitana.
He serves as Secretary of the Association for Hispanic Humanities, contributing to the broader academic community. While no specific information about student advising, grants, or awards is available in the provided text, his active publication record and professional roles indicate ongoing scholarly engagement.
