James Mardock is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he has taught since 2006. His roles include Director of Graduate Studies and general textual editor for the Internet Shakespeare Editions. He specializes in Shakespearean and Renaissance literature, with a focus on urban space in Jonson’s works and post-Reformation religious themes in drama. Mardock also contributes to theatrical practice as a dramaturge and director, notably with the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and Reno Little Theater.

His research interests center on Renaissance literature, Shakespeare studies, Ben Jonson’s urban drama, theater history, and the interplay between Protestant Reformation and early modern drama. Current projects include a book-length study on Calvin’s influence on early modern theater. Publications include Our Scene is London (2008), Stages of Engagement (2014), and critical editions of Shakespeare’s works.
Recent publications span Shakespearean textual analysis, religious symbolism in drama, and intertextuality between Renaissance theater and Victorian literature. Mardock’s editorial work and dramaturgical contributions highlight his interdisciplinary approach. He has also directed and acted in Shakespearean productions, including Henry V and Hamlet in original pronunciation, reflecting his engagement with historical performance practices.
