Dr. Fred Bertrand is a Professor and Program Director in the Biomedical Sciences Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Health Professions . He also holds joint appointments as Senior Scientist in the UAB School of Medicine and Scientist at the Nutrition Obesity Research Center and Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, Bone and Autoimmunity Center. With a career spanning over two decades at UAB, he has served as Acting Program Director , Interim Program Director , and Assistant Dean in the School of Health Professions. PhD in Microbiology (1995) and BS in Biology (1990) Current roles: Professor (P), Senior Scientist (C), Program Director Prior roles: Associate Professor (P/S), Assistant Dean, Acting Program Director Dr. Bertrand's research focuses on Notch signaling , GSK-3 interactions , and PTEN regulation in cancer biology. His work has advanced understanding of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) , stem cell pathways , and drug resistance mechanisms in colorectal, prostate, and leukemic cancers. He has pioneered interprofessional undergraduate research curricula integrating biomedical sciences and health care management. His recent publications examine Notch-3's role in DNA repair , adipose tissue dysfunction in PCOS , and Smad3 phosphorylation in EMT . These studies highlight his expertise in signaling pathway crosstalk and oncogenic processes . As an educator, he has taught courses in: Clinical Microbiology Biomedical Sciences Literature Cell Biology Honors Research Seminars Responsible Conduct of Research
