Chao He is an Associate Professor in Bio and Circular Economy at Tampere University, Finland, and holds an Academy Research Fellowship from the Research Council of Finland. He leads research in circular economy innovations, focusing on sustainable waste management, resource recovery, and thermochemical processes. He chairs the Finnish Thermal Energy Research Association (FTERA) and serves on editorial boards of journals like Waste Management and Separation and Purification Technology . His group develops low-carbon technologies for waste valorization, energy conversion, and critical material recovery. Key achievements include the 2015 Applied Energy Award and listing in the World's Top 2% Scientists (2020–2024). He leads projects in the CNESS research platform and BIC-FIRI infrastructure, advancing climate-neutral energy systems. Research spans sewage sludge treatment, biomass refining, and advanced catalytic materials. Over 100 peer-reviewed publications highlight contributions to environmental engineering, with impactful work on phosphorus recovery, microplastic toxicity, and CO 2 mitigation. Active in industry partnerships, he co-founded an environmental tech startup in Singapore.
