James Osborne is a Professor and Director of the Oregon Wine Research Institute (OWRI) at Oregon State University, where he coordinates multi-disciplinary research and outreach to support the Oregon wine industry. He holds an affiliation with the Department of Food Science & Technology. His research focuses on wine microbiology, particularly the impact of microorganisms like non-Saccharomyces yeasts, Brettanomyces, and Pediococcus on wine quality, with an emphasis on microbial interactions during fermentation and spoilage prevention. He teaches courses such as FST 469/569 (The Practice and Analysis of Winemaking) and FST 470/570 (Production and Analysis of Wines - Laboratory).
Osborne earned his BApplSci, Post Grad Dip Sci, and MSc in Microbiology from Massey University (New Zealand), followed by a PhD in Food Science from Washington State University. His professional affiliations include the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and the Australian Society of Viticulture and Enology.
His research interests span wine microbiology, non-Saccharomyces yeast applications, malolactic fermentation dynamics, and microbial spoilage mechanisms. He has published extensively on topics like microbial terroir, volatile sulfur compound formation, and the effects of biochar on vineyard soil and wine quality.
- Awards:
- Enology Best Paper Award (2023)
- ASEV Best Viticulture Paper Award (2019)
- Registry of Distinguished Teachers (2020)
His work bridges academic research and industry application through extension programs, including workshops on microbial monitoring, nitrogen management, and winemaking techniques.
