Dr. Peyden Shelton serves as Associate Professor of Trumpet at the University of Utah School of Music, where he teaches trumpet performance and related courses. Previously, he held positions as Assistant Professor at the University of Utah (2017-2023) and Lecturer of Trumpet at the University of Rochester and Cornell University.
Dr. Shelton earned his DMA from the Eastman School of Music, MM from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, and BM from Virginia Tech. His educational foundation has supported his dual career as both performer and educator.
As a performer, Shelton has built an international reputation through solo performances with ensembles like the Salt Lake Symphony and Reston Symphony Orchestra. He is a member of the internationally renowned Mirari Brass Quintet and co-founder of Fifth Bridge, an electro-acoustic trumpet ensemble that has collaborated with NASA, Harvard Center for Astrophysics, and the Smithsonian. His research focuses on expanding trumpet repertoire through projects like "The Trumpet Repertoire Project" which commissioned Frank Ticheli's "Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble."
Shelton's creative output spans traditional orchestral performances, innovative electro-acoustic collaborations, and educational outreach. His recent work shows increasing integration of technology with traditional trumpet performance, reflecting contemporary trends in music performance while maintaining strong connections to classical traditions.
Honors include winning the Graduate Soloist Division of the National Trumpet Competition (2014) and nominations for University of Utah teaching awards. He serves on multiple committees with the International Trumpet Guild, including as former Chair of the Orchestral Excerpt Competition.
As an educator, Shelton has presented masterclasses at numerous universities and conferences including the International Trumpet Guild Conference and Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. He has guided the University of Utah Trumpet Ensemble to semi-final rounds in the National Trumpet Competition and continues to develop innovative approaches to trumpet pedagogy.
Shelton maintains active performance engagements with the Utah Symphony Orchestra as a contracted substitute, Mirari Brass Quintet, and Fifth Bridge. His work with Fifth Bridge represents a cutting-edge approach to trumpet performance through digital amplification and processing of acoustic sound, creating new artistic possibilities for the instrument.
