Jie Cheng is an Associate Professor of Law and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Programs at the Peter A. Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia. Her expertise spans Chinese law and government, comparative constitutional law, judicial politics, and Hong Kong Basic Law. She previously taught at Tsinghua University School of Law (1999–2019) and held visiting appointments at institutions including University of Michigan Law School, Columbia Law School, and the University of Oslo Human Rights Center.
Education: LL.B., LL.M. (China University of Political Science and Law), Ph.D. (Beijing).
Research interests focus on administrative law, regulatory governance, Asian legal studies, and comparative law. Key themes include LGBTQ+ legal status in China, judicial independence in Asia Pacific, Hong Kong’s constitutional dynamics, and late Qing constitutional reforms.
Notable publications include Statecraft And State Powers (2015) and Essence Of Constitutionalism (2012). Recent work addresses LGBTQ+ rights in China and the impact of Hong Kong’s National Security Law.
Grants: Holder of SSHRC Insight Grant (2022–2025) for 'Judicial Politics in China'.
