Prof. Joseph Yu-Shek Cheng is a Visiting Scholar at the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan, affiliated with City University of Hong Kong as Chair Professor of Political Science and Coordinator of the Contemporary China Research Project. His expertise spans political development in China and Hong Kong, Chinese foreign policy, and local governance in southern China. He has edited influential volumes such as *Whither China’s Democracy?* and *Guangdong - Challenges in Development and Crisis Management*.
Prof. Cheng has held significant roles, including founding editor of the *Hong Kong Journal of Social Sciences* and *The Journal of Comparative Asian Development*. He was actively involved in Hong Kong’s civil society, serving as chairman of the Hong Kong Observers (1980-82), convener of Power for Democracy (2002-04), and secretary-general of the Civic Party (2006-08). He also contributed to academia as founding president of the Asian Studies Association of Hong Kong (2005-07). Currently, he is engaged in launching the New School of Democracy.
