Matt Spencer is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM) within the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Warwick. His research bridges Science & Technology Studies (STS) and Cyber Security, focusing on sociocultural dimensions of digital technologies and knowledge practices. Spencer holds fellowships including UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Senior Fellow at the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security. He earned a PhD in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London (2013) and a Social Anthropology degree from the University of Cambridge. Prior academic roles include IT/digital technology delivery across sectors like media and transport. Research interests include cybersecurity assurance policy, de-perimeterised security models, vulnerability analysis, and computational science methodologies. His work integrates anthropological fieldwork, contributing to frameworks like the Trust Mapping workshop methodology. Key publications explore Zero Trust architectures, security modelling (e.g., MORS grid), and computational science practices. He advises doctoral students on topics like inclusive AI security and software threat modeling, with a focus on securing funding through scholarships. Awards include EPSRC SPRITE+ Expert Fellowship and recognition for advancing sociotechnical cybersecurity. Active in interdisciplinary research, Spencer leads initiatives in computational science ethics and cyber resilience strategies.
