Barbara Quimby is an Assistant Professor of Marine Science and Policy at Hawaii Pacific University’s College of Natural and Computational Sciences, Department of Natural Science. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the San Diego State University-UCSB Joint Doctoral Program, an M.A. in Anthropology from San Diego State University, and an A.B. in Anthropology from Occidental College. As a researcher, she focuses on the social, cultural, and political dimensions of coastal and marine systems, emphasizing equity in environmental governance and climate resilience in Hawai’i and the Pacific Islands. Her work integrates adaptive governance theory, Indigenous knowledge, and participatory research methods. Dr. Quimby teaches courses on environmental sustainability, GIS, marine policy, and honors seminars. She coordinates the Islands of Opportunity Alliance and actively publishes on topics like small-scale fisheries, climate adaptation, and water resource management. Her research bridges policy, practice, and community engagement to foster sustainable solutions for marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes experiential learning and inclusivity, prioritizing first-generation students’ success. She has conducted fieldwork in the Western U.S., Indonesia, and the Pacific Islands, focusing on community-driven resource management and the intersection of environmental justice with policy.
