Christine H. Tran is an Assistant Professor (LTA) at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), affiliated with the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information, and Technology (ICCIT) and the Department of English & Drama. She is a core faculty member in UTM's innovative Game Studies program. Her PhD in Digital Media and Game Studies was completed at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information, where her SSHRC-funded dissertation examined the labor conditions of gendered and racialized creators on Twitch.tv. She holds an MA from York University and a BA from the University of Toronto Scarborough. Tran’s research focuses on the creator economy, digital labor, and feminist media studies. She explores how platforms like Twitch, TikTok, and Zoom shape experiences of leisure, labor, and domesticity, with a focus on marginalized groups. Her work critiques platform capitalism’s impact on cultural workers, emphasizing intersectional analyses of gender, race, and class. She has held fellowships at the Critical Digital Humanities Initiative, the Centre for Culture and Technology, and Massey College. Her recent work includes ethnographic studies of Twitch streamers, analyses of Zoom’s role in remote work, and critical examinations of platform governance. She has published in journals such as Television & New Media , Communication, Culture & Critique , and New Media & Society . Her research also engages with creative formats, including autoethnographic essays and digital humanities projects like the Twine game Amid the Pink Collar . Tran has been interviewed by major media outlets like The Guardian , WIRED , and BBC Future as an expert on digital platforms and internet culture. She is committed to bridging academic research with public-facing scholarship, advocating for equitable labor practices in the platform economy.
