Robert Soden is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto's Department of Computer Science, specializing in climate informatics, human-centered computing, and science and technology studies. He coordinates the Toronto Climate Observatory and is affiliated with the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society, the School of Cities, and the Critical Computing Group. His research focuses on integrating participatory methods to enhance environmental and disaster risk technologies, emphasizing equity and justice. Soden holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Colorado Boulder, alongside degrees in Natural Resources, History, and Political Science. He has received funding from NSERC, SSHRC, NSF, and NOAA, among others.
Key achievements include a 2021 Best Paper Award at CSCW for his work on historicism in collaborative computing research. Recent grants include equity-focused disaster risk modeling initiatives and support for the Toronto Climate Summer School. Soden’s prior roles include work with the World Resources Institute, Development Seed, and co-founding the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team. His research bridges technical innovation with societal impact, addressing climate governance, open data, and marginalized communities' needs in disaster response.
