Luke Stark is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) at Western University in London, Ontario. He holds the CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar title (2024-2026) and was the inaugural Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Toronto’s Schwartz Reisman Institute (2023-2024). His research focuses on the ethical, historical, and social impacts of computing and AI, particularly in areas like emotion recognition, algorithmic fairness, and surveillance. He earned his PhD in Media, Culture, and Communication from New York University (2016) and holds an Honours BA and MA in History from the University of Toronto.
Key research areas include:
- Historical trajectories of emotion and computing
- Ethical implications of AI in healthcare, education, and governance
- Critique of AI ethics movements and regulatory frameworks
His book project, Reordering Emotion: Histories of Computing and Human Feeling from Cybernetics to AI, is under contract with MIT Press. He has been funded by SSHRC, NSF, and the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation, and his work appears in New Media & Society, ACM FAccT, and Harvard Business Review.
