Dr. Varuni Wimalasiri is a Lecturer in Management (Organisational Psychology) at the Business School, University of Aberdeen. She is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist (HCPC) with a PhD from the University of Nottingham and postdoctoral experience at Loughborough University. She has held academic positions at Exeter, Sussex, and Bournemouth Universities and has contributed to third-sector initiatives on equality and women’s work between 2015 and 2017.

Her research applies psychological principles to examine how intersectionality, identity, and equality shape women’s experiences and wellbeing at work. She investigates how diversity programs can address both visible and hidden workplace inequalities and how marginalized communities are further affected by systemic inequities. Her work is closely aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality).
Her recent publications explore themes such as gender-identity conflict, refugee women’s employment, ethical dilemmas in refugee research, and vocational choices during resettlement. She employs qualitative and critical methodologies, often in collaboration with public and third-sector partners.
Dr. Wimalasiri has secured competitive funding from ESRC, EPSRC, Big Lottery, RSSB, and internal university sources for projects on women refugees, creativity in emergency services, and diversity in high-risk industries. Her research has been published in top journals including Human Relations, Journal of Management, Work & Stress, and Personnel Review.
