Louise Bryant is a Professor of Psychological and Social Medicine at the University of Leeds and a Chartered Psychologist. She holds leadership roles as Faculty Deputy Dean for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) and Dean for EDI at the University of Leeds. She also leads the REF 2021 Impact activities for the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS). Her research focuses on prenatal screening technologies, health inequalities in adults with learning disabilities, and advancing EDI in academia and healthcare.
Education: PhD in Psychology and a First Class BSc (Hons) in Psychology. Professional memberships include Associate Fellow and Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (AFBPsS, CPsychol).
Her applied health research examines informed decision-making in prenatal testing (e.g., Down’s syndrome screening) and the social context of testing, including cultural and societal influences on women’s choices. Current projects include a Wellbeing of Women-funded collaboration with the University of Loughborough and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, using conversation analysis to improve midwife training for informed decision support.
Beyond academia, she advises Public Health England on national fetal anomaly screening policies and was the first Social Scientist appointed to the UK National Screening Committee (2019). Her work bridges clinical practice, policy, and equity-focused research.
