Amy Redhead is a Lecturer in Sociology & Social Policy at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Sociology and Social Policy under the Faculty of Social Sciences. She joined the university in 2019 on a 3+1 ESRC Scholarship, completing her MA in Social Research Methods followed by a PhD titled Representing Down's Syndrome in Documentary: Exploring independence, relationships and prenatal screening in the documentary genre.
Her research focuses on disability studies, disability representation, and participatory methodologies. Central themes include cultural narratives around Down’s syndrome, the impact of documentaries on personhood, and challenging ableist ideologies. Collaborating with co-researchers with Down’s syndrome, her work emphasizes participatory research to amplify marginalized voices and shift societal perceptions toward affirming disability identity.
Her academic contributions engage with theories of vulnerability, biopolitics, normalcy, and ableism, particularly in contexts of prenatal screening and media representation.
