Dr Gareth Thomas is a Reader in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University, specializing in disability studies, health and illness, and medical sociology. His research focuses on the experiences of disabled individuals and families, particularly in contexts like prenatal screening, popular media, and the arts. He co-leads the Medicine, Science and Culture Research Group (MeSC) and the Cardiff Interdisciplinary Network on Disability (CIND), and serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Sociology of Health and Illness. His work explores stigma, reproductive politics, and the intersection of medicine with everyday life.
Key publications include Down's Syndrome Screening and Reproductive Politics (2017) and Disability, Normalcy, and the Everyday (2018), with an upcoming book on stigma in health contexts. His research has been supported by the British Academy, ESRC, and Health and Care Research Wales. Thomas’s interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies to address societal challenges in health and disability.
His recent work emphasizes energy justice and decarbonization, analyzing public perceptions of green transitions and hydrogen energy. This reflects a broader shift toward integrating environmental and social justice themes into his research. Grants and collaborations underscore his role as a leading voice in both disability studies and energy policy.
