Dr. Rebecca Dimond is a Lecturer in Medical Sociology at Cardiff University's School of Social Sciences. She specializes in research areas including genetic syndromes, reproductive technologies, patient and family perspectives, and qualitative methodologies. Her work bridges medical sociology with ethical and policy dimensions of genetic medicine. She co-convenes the Medicine, Science and Culture (MeSC) research group within SOCSI and has been active in the BSA Medical Sociology (Wales) group.
Dr. Dimond holds a PhD from Cardiff University (2011), focusing on the social construction of genetic disorders like 22q11 deletion syndrome. She has held roles ranging from research assistant to lecturer, contributing to interdisciplinary projects such as the ESRC Future Research Leaders grant examining mitochondrial donation technologies. Her teaching includes modules like Sociology of Health and Illness and Genetics and Society.
Her research examines how patients, families, and professionals navigate genetic risks and emerging technologies. Notable projects include exploring mitochondrial donation's societal implications and patient experiences of rare diseases. She has published widely in journals like Social Science & Medicine and Health, and authored the book Legalising Mitochondrial Donation: Enacting Ethical Futures in UK Biomedical Politics (2018).
Awards include the Learned Society of Wales Dillwyn Medal (2020) and HEA Fellowship (2021). She is actively involved in supervising PhD students in qualitative research and health-related topics.
