Robyn Smith serves as a Music Teaching Associate (Trombone) at the University of Illinois Chicago's School of Theatre and Music, concurrently holding the position of Principal Trombonist with the Chicago Sinfonietta Orchestra. Previously, she was Second Trombonist of the Detroit Opera and maintains active performance engagements with major orchestras nationwide.
Her educational credentials include:

Smith specializes in cross-genre trombone performance spanning classical orchestral works, jazz ensembles, and contemporary collaborations. She actively champions diversity in high art music through dismantling systemic barriers for Black and brown musicians, integrating this advocacy into her educational philosophy and performance practice.
Her distinguished recognition includes:
- 2018 International Trombone Association’s Marsteller Solo Competition victory
As an educator, Smith mentors underrepresented youth through Sistema Ravinia and national programs dedicated to developing Black and brown professional musicians. She provides private instruction while advancing equity initiatives across music education platforms.
Performance highlights include associations with the Rodney Marsalis Big Brass, St. Louis Symphony, Boston Pops, Boston Symphony Orchestra (including international tours), and notable appearances at the Grammy Awards with Lizzo, Detroit Jazz Festival, and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra.
