Ramani Moonesinghe is a Professor in the Department of Targeted Intervention at University College London (UCL) and an Honorary Consultant in Anaesthesia, Perioperative, and Critical Care Medicine at UCL Hospitals. She holds leadership roles including National Clinical Director for Critical and Perioperative Care at NHS England, Deputy Chair of the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia, and inaugural Director of the NIHR Central London Patient Safety Research Collaboration. Her strategic roles include leading UCL's Centre for Perioperative Medicine and directing the Research Department for Targeted Intervention.
Her research focuses on perioperative and critical care, including novel technologies, risk prediction, outcome measurement, and improvement studies. She has led studies recruiting over 90,000 participants to the NIHR portfolio, with global reach, including low- and middle-income countries. Her group currently supervises 13 doctoral students.
Ramani received the OBE in 2021 for service to anaesthesia and critical care. She previously directed the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ Health Services Research Centre and advised on academic training for seven years. Her clinical leadership includes steering the NHS’s critical care response to the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery of elective services.
Her research interests span perioperative medicine, critical care systems optimization, patient safety, and global health, with a focus on translational research linking clinical practice and policy.
