Professor Gareth Ackland is a Clinical Professor of Perioperative Medicine at Queen Mary University of London, based primarily at the William Harvey Research Institute within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He holds a British Oxygen Company Chair in Anaesthesia (2016-2020) and has been affiliated with institutions including University College London (UCL) and Stanford University Medical Center.
Education: He graduated from St John’s College, Oxford University Medical School with an intercalated PhD funded by the Wellcome Trust Prize Studentship. His clinical training spanned general medicine, anesthesiology, and critical care, largely through UCL-linked rotations.
Research: His work focuses on improving outcomes for patients undergoing major surgery or critical illness via translational models. Key areas include autonomic regulation of tissue injury and perioperative organ injury. Collaborations include large multi-centre studies like VISION-UK and METS. His lab, the AcklandLab, explores neurobiological mechanisms of autonomic control in inflammation and perioperative care.
