Professor Paul Myles is a leading academic and clinician in the field of anaesthesia and perioperative medicine at Monash University and Alfred Health. He serves as Chair and Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, with a strong focus on clinical research and large-scale trials. His work is supported by over $55 million in NHMRC and MRFF funding, and he plays key editorial roles in the British Journal of Anaesthesia and Anesthesiology.
- PhD Supervisor: Accepting PhD students in anaesthesia, clinical physiology, pharmacology, and trial design.
- External Roles: Editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia; Editorial Consultant for The Lancet.
Professor Myles' research is centered on improving surgical outcomes through rigorous clinical trials, particularly in perioperative medicine. His interests include measuring quality of recovery, optimizing intraoperative management (e.g., oxygen and fluid therapy), and evaluating pharmacological interventions. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
His recent publications reflect a strong trend in large, multicenter trials focused on patient-centered outcomes, safety, and evidence-based perioperative care. Topics include fluid therapy, oxygen administration, lidocaine infusions, and pandemic recovery in surgery. These works often employ advanced statistical methods and contribute significantly to global clinical guidelines.
- Australian NHMRC Leadership Fellow (L3)
- Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences
Professor Myles leads multiple active research projects, including major clinical trials such as CALIPSO, LOLIPOP, and COPE. He has secured substantial grant funding and mentors a broad research team. His leadership extends to national and international collaborations, enhancing the impact and efficiency of perioperative clinical research.
He is affiliated with the perioperative research team at Monash University and collaborates extensively with Alfred Health. His lab and research group focus on designing and executing high-impact clinical trials that shape modern anaesthetic and surgical practice.
