Dr. Andrew Toner serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia Medical School in the Department of Emergency Medicine. He also holds positions as Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Western Australia and Clinician Research Fellow with the Raine Foundation/Department of Health. Additionally, he works as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Royal Perth Hospital since July 2016.
Dr. Toner completed his undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, medical qualification at Oxford University, and anaesthetic training at St. George's School of Anaesthesia in London. He later earned his Doctor of Medicine research degree (equivalent to PhD) from Cambridge University, receiving the Ralph Noble Prize for best clinical thesis in 2018.
His research focuses on improving outcomes after high-risk surgery, chronic post-surgical pain, perioperative inflammation/autonomic function, and apnoeic oxygenation. His work has significantly advanced knowledge in perioperative medicine, particularly regarding lidocaine infusions and their effects on surgical outcomes, as evidenced by his recent publications spanning cardiac surgery, breast cancer procedures, and risk prediction models.
Dr. Toner has secured substantial research funding including:
- $4.3 million from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) for the LOLIPOP Trial
- $342,625 from the Raine Medical Research Foundation/Department of Health
- $69,605 from the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists
His research has been recognized with multiple awards and contributes significantly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
