Alwin Chuan is a Conjoint Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), specializing in anaesthesia and pain medicine. He is internationally recognized for innovations in regional anaesthesia, perioperative ultrasonography, and medical education. His research focuses on improving surgical patient outcomes through evidence-based practices and technological advancements. He holds leadership roles in organizations such as the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and the Asia-Oceania Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine.
Education: MBBS (Hons) from the University of Sydney, PhD from Macquarie University, and Postgraduate Certificates in Clinical Ultrasound and Medical Education. He is a Fellow of the College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA).
Research interests include regional anaesthesia techniques, perioperative ultrasound, and medical education methodologies. He has published over 60 journal articles, contributed to textbooks, and developed educational tools such as the Oxford Regional Anaesthesia Pocket Guide. His work on virtual reality (VR) training for anaesthesia procedures has been internationally recognized, including a 2011 award for an innovative iPhone app.
Grants total over $4 million from bodies like NHMRC, MRFF, and ANZCA. Key awards include 2nd place in the ASA Scientific Education Exhibits (2011) and leadership roles in national and international research committees.
He directs the Liverpool Hospital perioperative ultrasound fellowship program and has contributed to policy development for surgical care guidelines in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and North America.
