- Secondary Affiliation: Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University
Leslie earned her medical degree from the University of Melbourne and completed anaesthesia training in Melbourne and San Francisco, achieving ANZCA Fellowship in 1993. She later earned a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Epidemiology, solidifying her research credentials.
Her research interests are centered on improving perioperative outcomes, with a focus on anaesthesia monitoring, thermoregulation, awareness under anaesthesia, pain management, and surgical complications. Her work significantly contributes to global efforts in patient safety and sustainable development in healthcare. She has led and contributed to major multi-centre clinical trials such as B-Aware, ENIGMA-I/II, POISE-1/2/3, PADDI, and ROCKet, shaping evidence-based anaesthesia practice.
The recent publications highlight her ongoing leadership in high-impact perioperative research, particularly in oxygen therapy, steroid use, infection prevention, and kidney protection. These studies reflect a consistent trend toward optimizing anaesthetic techniques to improve recovery and reduce long-term complications.
Her scientific accolades include:
- ASA/Boots Young Investigator Award
- ASA’s Gilbert Troup Medal
- ANZCA Gilbert Brown Prize
- ANZCA Douglas Joseph Professorship
- Robert Orton Medal
- Melbourne Health Chairman’s Award
- Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Research
- Officer in the Order of Australia (AO), 2016
- Doctor of Medical Science (Honoris Causa), University of Melbourne
Leslie has served in numerous leadership roles, including President of ANZCA (2012–2014), Chair of the Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges (2011–2013), and currently as Chair of the Specialist Education Accreditation Committee at the Australian Medical Council. She is a chief investigator on multiple active research projects, including the LOLIPOP, POISE-3, and ROCKet trials, and is a key editor of Miller’s Anesthesia (9th edition). She also serves on the editorial boards of Anesthesia and Analgesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia, and Anesthesiology.
She leads a robust research network focused on perioperative outcomes, collaborating with national and international institutions. Her team conducts large-scale clinical trials and secondary analyses to inform best practices in anaesthesia and surgery.
