Professor Tomás Corcoran is a Clinical Professor at the School of Medicine and Pharmacology, University of Western Australia, and the School of Translational Medicine, Monash University. He serves as Senior Staff Anaesthetist and Director of Research at the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, Royal Perth Hospital, and is Deputy Chair of the CTN Executive. His work bridges clinical anaesthesia, intensive care, and translational research with a focus on improving global perioperative outcomes.

Professor Corcoran trained in internal medicine and anaesthesia in Ireland, completed a cardiothoracic anaesthesia fellowship at St Barts Hospital, London, and further trained in Intensive Care Medicine in Australia. He holds specialist qualifications in both Australia and Ireland and earned a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from University College Cork, Ireland.
His research is centered on patient safety, clinical trial design, and perioperative outcomes, particularly in the areas of systemic inflammation, corticosteroid use, chronic postsurgical pain, and myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery. He employs methodologies including randomized controlled trials, propensity score analysis, and machine learning models to predict surgical risks.
The most recent publications highlight a strong trend in analyzing large clinical trial data (e.g., PADDI, RELIEF) to assess the long-term effects of perioperative interventions. Key themes include the role of dexamethasone in pain and infection prevention, machine learning for risk prediction, and the impact of systemic inflammation on recovery. These works are published in high-impact journals such as British Journal of Anaesthesia and Anaesthesia.
Professor Corcoran has secured substantial research funding, including four NHMRC project grants totaling $10 million and a $4.3 million MRFF grant for the LOLIPOP trial. His career funding totals $17,498,750. He is Principal Chief Investigator on the active LOLIPOP trial (2020–2026), which investigates lidocaine infusions for persistent postoperative pain in breast surgery patients.
He has published over 60 papers, with notable contributions in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and BMJ Open. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being. He is actively involved in multi-institutional collaborations and leads a research network focused on anaesthesia and critical care outcomes.
