Dr. Tom Abbott is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine at Queen Mary University of London’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal London Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust). He graduated first in his class from Oxford University Medical School (2011), earning three prizes and a distinction. His academic journey includes a PhD in clinical epidemiology (2017, Queen Mary) and postgraduate anaesthesia training (2024, London School of Anaesthesia). He held an NIHR Clinical Lectureship (2021–2024) and currently holds an NIHR Development and Skills Enhancement Fellowship (2025).
His research focuses on improving postoperative survival and reducing complications via epidemiological methods. He leads major studies like the PROTECT platform trial and the RESURGENT epidemiological study, and co-leads the SAPPHIRE study. Key areas include perioperative infection, antimicrobial prophylaxis, respiratory failure, and cardiac biomarkers. His work addresses global challenges such as surgical environmental impact and pandemic-related surgical delays.
Dr. Abbott’s grants include NIHR awards, Academy of Medical Sciences funding, and collaborations with institutions like the University of Toronto and University of Leeds. He collaborates with experts like Prof. Rupert Pearse and Prof. Duminda Wijeysundera, advancing translational research in critical care and perioperative medicine.
