Professor Cliff Shelton is Professor in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at Lancaster Medical School, University of Lancaster, and Consultant Anaesthetist at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester. He serves as Director of Simulation and Clinical Skills for the MBChB program and Co-Director of the PGDip AaPOS program. As strategic lead for sustainability at the NIHR RSS Hub, he focuses on quality, safety, and sustainable healthcare in medical education.
His research examines:
- Anaesthesia for hip fracture surgery, obstetrics, and emergency care
- Sustainable healthcare practices in anaesthesia
- Medical education innovation
- Quality improvement in perioperative care
- Healthcare workforce distribution
Recent publications address sustainable anaesthesia practices, healthcare inequalities, and surgical outcomes research. Consistent themes include environmental sustainability in healthcare, health equity in surgical access, and innovative approaches to medical education.
Awards include Original Research Poster Presentation - First Prize. He supervises NIHR Academic Clinical Fellows and PhD candidates in perioperative care and medical education. Current projects include 'Periprosthetic femoral fractures: data, management and outcomes' and 'Mapping underdoctored areas'.
Professional leadership includes co-chairing the Association of Anaesthetists Safety, Standards, Environment and Sustainability Committee, deputy chair of World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists Sustainability Committee, and co-chair of Royal College of Anaesthetists Centre for Research and Improvement Patient Carer and Public Involvement and Engagement group. He serves as editor for Anaesthesia journal.
