Professor Mike Grocott is a distinguished academic at the University of Southampton, holding the position of Professor of Anaesthesia & Critical Care and Director of the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre (2022-28). He chairs the NIHR Directors Forum (2025-27) and co-founded the Centre for Perioperative Health Economics and Policy (CPHEP). His roles include serving as a consultant in critical care medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and as an NIHR Senior Investigator (2018-22, reappointed 2022-26).
Research interests span Perioperative Care, Critical Care, Prehabilitation, Hypoxia, Integrative Physiology, Clinical Trials, Health Services Research, and Health Economics. His projects include the COVSurf clinical trial for severe COVID-19 and the Frail2Fit study. He has led major initiatives such as the Xtreme Everest Oxygen Research Consortium and the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit.
Publications focus on critical care advancements, perioperative management, and clinical trials. He actively supervises PhD students and collaborates internationally. His work bridges experimental medicine, clinical trials, and health economics, with a focus on improving patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency.
