Professor West's research focuses on prehabilitation, perioperative risk assessment, and complex cancer surgery, particularly colorectal cancer. His work interrogates the pathophysiological mechanisms of changing fitness, nutrition, body composition, frailty and mitochondrial function with cancer therapies. He implements prehabilitation interventions to rescue and improve metabolic health, physiological resilience, and cancer outcomes. His research program aims to improve perioperative and long-term tumor outcomes in patients undergoing major surgery using tailored multimodal prehabilitation interventions.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on surgical oncology, particularly in colorectal and pelvic cancers. His work spans clinical trials, systematic reviews, and observational studies examining prehabilitation strategies, surgical techniques, and outcomes assessment. His research demonstrates a commitment to improving surgical care through evidence-based interventions and global collaboration, particularly in low to middle-income countries through the NIHR GlobalSurg program.
