James Kinross is a Reader in Colorectal Surgery and Consultant Surgeon at Imperial College London's Faculty of Medicine. His work bridges clinical practice and translational research, focusing on minimally invasive surgery, microbiome-driven colorectal cancer mechanisms, and surgical technology innovation. He leads the iEndoscope project (NIHR-funded) developing real-time mass spectrometry for colorectal cancer detection and co-founded the International Cancer Microbiome Consortium.
- Affiliations: Department of Surgery & Cancer, African Microbiome Institute, PanSurg Project
- Education: NIHR Clinical Lecturer, Ethicon Laparoscopic Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery
Research interests include microbiome engineering to improve surgical outcomes, digital surgery (AI/AR/VR integration), and surgical bioresilience. He pioneered the use of HoloLens 2 during the pandemic for remote teaching and infection control.
His lab investigates microbiome-disease interactions, particularly in cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, with projects like the Horizon 2020-funded GROWTH consortium studying anastomotic healing. Awards include the Royal College of Surgeons of England Fellowship and Academy of Medical Sciences support.
He collaborates globally through initiatives like the Microbiome Network and leads data-science efforts such as REDASA for real-time pandemic analysis. Current projects explore microbiome-based therapies, surgical skill enhancement via mixed reality, and AI-driven surgical decision support systems.
