Daniel Martin

Professor Daniel Martin is a leading academic and clinician in perioperative and intensive care medicine at the University of Plymouth, affiliated with the Peninsula Medical School (Faculty of Health). He conducts clinical work at Derriford Hospital and leads major national clinical trials, including the NIHR-funded UK-ROX and EXALT studies. Previously a professor at University College London, he joined Plymouth in 2020 to establish a sustainable research legacy in critical care.

His research focuses on human responses to oxygen levels, particularly hypoxia and hyperoxia, informed by groundbreaking high-altitude expeditions, including summiting Mount Everest in 2007 and leading the 2013 Xtreme Everest expedition. His work bridges field physiology and intensive care, revealing cellular parallels between high-altitude and critically ill patients.

Analysis of his recent publications shows a strong trend in clinical trials (UK-ROX, EXAKT, EXALT), equity in medical devices, exercise-based prehabilitation, and high-altitude physiology. His work increasingly emphasizes health equity, diagnostic accuracy, and translational applications of extreme physiology to improve ICU outcomes.

Daniel Martin has supervised and mentored numerous researchers through large collaborative projects like Xtreme Everest. He has secured significant funding from NIHR and ICNARC for multi-site trials. His editorial leadership includes being Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Intensive Care Society and editor of the upcoming 9th edition of Oh's Intensive Care Manual. He also serves on the MHRA interim devices working group.

He is building a multidisciplinary research team at Plymouth, supported by the recruitment of his partner, Dr. Helen McKenna, an NIHR-funded Academic Clinical Fellow. Together, they aim to establish Plymouth as a national hub for perioperative and intensive care research, integrating clinical practice, laboratory science, and translational innovation.
