Professor Paula A. Franzese serves as the Peter W. Rodino Professor of Law at Seton Hall University School of Law. She holds additional roles as Special Counsel for Attorney Ethics, Professionalism and Leadership, and Director of the Leadership Fellows Program. Her academic career spans over three decades with notable roles including Distinguished Teaching and Learning Professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and leadership positions in the American Association of Higher Education and American Bar Association. Educated at Barnard College (B.A., 1980) and Columbia University School of Law (J.D., 1983), she has received prestigious awards including the COGEL Award for ethics contributions and the Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid Medal.
Her research focuses on property law, fair housing, government ethics, and civics education. Notable works include the Short and Happy Guide series and empirical studies on tenant evictions and housing affordability. She pioneered initiatives to reform landlord-tenant law, combat tenant blacklisting, and promote ethics standards through roles advising governors and mayors like Cory Booker. Her pedagogical innovations emphasize empathy-driven teaching and have earned her the Student Bar Association's Professor of the Year Award ten times.
Prof. Franzese's advocacy spans legislative reforms, amicus briefs (e.g., Kelo case), and international human rights summits on education access. She chairs ethics commissions and has authored over 50 scholarly articles/journal contributions. Current projects address restorative housing justice and civic literacy revitalization.
