Julia Devanthery is a Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor of Law and Director of Clinical Pedagogy and Curricular Innovation at Harvard Law School’s Legal Services Center. She co-teaches the Housing Law Clinic and directs the Housing Justice for Survivors Project, focusing on representing tenants facing housing instability due to domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Her work includes impact litigation, community trainings, and law reform efforts.
Education: J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law (2009), B.A. from Brown University (2004). She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts, and California. Previously, she worked at the ACLU of Southern California, addressing homelessness-related civil rights issues and systemic legal challenges.
Research interests include civil rights, disability law, gender justice, poverty law, and housing equity. She has authored influential articles on VAWA defenses in evictions, tenant rights, and systemic legal reforms. Her advocacy includes securing landmark rulings like Boston Housing Authority v. Y.A. (2019), affirming survivors’ rights under VAWA.
Awards: Recognized as a Top Women of Law by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly (2022), Excellence in the Law: Up & Coming (2014), and a Boston Bar Association Public Interest Leadership Program member (2014).
Labs/Teams: Leads the Housing Justice for Survivors Project and collaborates across Harvard’s clinics to design cross-disciplinary curricula. She also chairs the Boston Bar Association’s Community Re-entry Education Committee and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Boston Bar Foundation.
