Kurt Harris serves as Associate Professor of English and Director of Learning Abroad at Southern Utah University within the College of Humanities & Social Sciences and Department of English. He began his career at SUU in 2001, became Director of Learning Abroad in 2010, and previously chaired the English Department.
Holding a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz, Harris specializes in British Literature with focused expertise in the Victorian period. His academic trajectory evolved toward international education leadership while maintaining his literary scholarship foundation.
Harris's professional work centers on experiential learning frameworks and global education systems. He co-developed SUU's award-winning EDGE program (Education Designed to Give Experience) and directed over a dozen study abroad initiatives, demonstrating consistent integration of pedagogical theory with practical international experiences across his research domains.
As a key administrator in international education, Harris currently directs SUU's Global Studies Minor Program and serves as advisor for Boren Awards, Marshall Scholarships, Fulbright Student Programs, Fulbright Scholar programs, and the Peace Corps Prep Program. He previously led SUU's American Studies Centers in Changsha and Xi'an, China.
Harris founded and served as Editor-in-Chief of Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education: A Journal for Engaged Educators, establishing scholarly infrastructure for his field while directing institutional programs like the EDGE initiative that received national recognition for innovative experiential pedagogy.
