Dr. Matt Barton is a Professor and Director of the Master of Professional Communication Studies at Southern Utah University (SUU). He earned his Bachelor’s in Communication from SUU (1995), MA from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Since 2001, he has taught courses ranging from fundamental communication theories to specialized topics like health communication and technical writing.
His research focuses on Health Communication, Rhetoric, and Education, reflected in his 18 authored/co-authored books and publications. He has received notable awards for his work, including SUU’s Outstanding Educator (2005) and Service Learning Fellow (2012). Barton emphasizes the practical value of communication skills across professions, inspiring students through mentorship and curriculum development.
As a dedicated educator, he oversees the Master of Professional Communication program and has been instrumental in integrating service learning and applied research. Beyond academia, Barton cherishes family time, SUU traditions, and community engagement.
