Dr. Cecily Heiner serves as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Southern Utah University (SUU), where she has contributed since 2011. She leads initiatives such as the Tech Ambassadors program and established SUU's first ACM-W Chapter (Women in Computing). Her research focuses on intelligent tutoring systems, educational data mining, and improving computer science education accessibility.
Education: BS in Computer Science (Brigham Young University), MA in Computer Aided Language Learning (Carnegie Mellon University), PhD in Computer Science (University of Utah).
Key contributions include curriculum development for elementary robotics through the White House CSforAll Summit collaboration and training over 200 high school teachers via the NSF-funded Utah Exploring Computer Science Initiative. She has driven 20-40% enrollment growth and doubled CS graduation rates at SUU.
Her NSF work and community outreach emphasize making abstract concepts tangible for rural students. Outside academia, she enjoys travel (visited all 50 U.S. states and 20+ countries), scuba diving, cooking, and organ playing.
