Dr. David Tufte is an Associate Professor of Economics at Southern Utah University (SUU), part of the School of Business. He holds a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Economics from the University at Buffalo, New York. Prior to SUU, he held tenured positions at the University of New Orleans, where he directed the Ph.D. program and taught in executive and international programs. He also taught at the University of Alabama, University of Utah, and Tulane University. At SUU, he teaches courses like Principles of Microeconomics, Managerial Economics, and Spreadsheet Engineering.
Tufte’s research explores unconventional applications of economics, including zombie narratives, sports economics, prediction markets, and financial crises. He emphasizes student-driven learning, believing academic success stems from persistent effort. Though not focused on awards, he values recognition through tackling unique teaching challenges. He highlights SUU’s unique position as a regional residential university, fostering close student-professor interactions.
His career spans over 27 years, with a focus on applied economics and interdisciplinary research. He has advised Ph.D. students and contributed to policy analysis, financial modeling, and cultural economics.
