Dr. Johnny MacLean is an Associate Professor of Geology at Southern Utah University (SUU), specializing in experiential and field-based education. He coordinates SUU’s Semester in the Parks initiative, an immersive program based at Bryce Canyon National Park, blending geology, outdoor recreation, and interdisciplinary learning. His teaching philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning through field trips to Utah’s geologic landmarks.
MacLean holds a B.S. in Geology from Furman University, an M.S. in Earth Science from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of Montana. Prior to academia, he worked in the oil and gas industry in Texas and environmental consulting in Montana. His passion for education stems from a high school English teacher who inspired him to become an engaging educator. Beyond academia, he is an avid outdoorsman, planning a 270-mile Grand Canyon rafting trip. His research and teaching focus on geologic hazards, tectonic processes, and environmental applications of geology.
