Eldridge M. Moores

Eldridge M. Moores (1938–2018) was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Davis. He held a B.S. from the California Institute of Technology (1959), and M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University (1961, 1963). His career spanned nearly 60 years, revolutionizing understanding of ophiolites, plate tectonics, and continental assembly. He joined UC Davis in 1966, shaping the department into an internationally respected program.

Research Interests: Eldridge’s work centered on ophiolites, tectonics, and structural geology, with global contributions from the Sierra Nevada to Cyprus and Greece. He proposed the SWEAT hypothesis (Southwest U.S.–East Antarctica) for supercontinent Rodinia and pioneered studies on ophiolites as oceanic crust remnants. His influential textbooks Structural Geology (1992, 2007) and Tectonics (1995) remain foundational.

Publications: Over 130 articles advanced tectonic theory, fracking impacts, and ophiolite dynamics. His 2016 paper on fracking addressed environmental and engineering challenges, while early work on Vourinos Ophiolite (1969) redefined tectonic models.

Awards & Leadership: GSA President (1996), Editor of Geology (1981–1987), and founder of two endowments supporting geoscience education and fieldwork. He championed diversity, public geoscience literacy, and K–12 curriculum reform.

Legacy: Eldridge’s impact extends beyond academia through field trips, music (cellist in UC Davis Symphony), and community advocacy. His motto, “Civilization exists by geologic consent,” reflects his integration of science, ethics, and art.
