معرفی
Dr David Murphy is a Senior Lecturer in Geoscience (Earth Materials) at the School of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Faculty of Science, Queensland University of Technology (QUT). He has been a core academic in the faculty since 2007, contributing to teaching, research, and supervision in geochemistry and petrology. His work spans early Earth processes, igneous petrogenesis, and innovative applications of geochemical data.
- PhD, University of Queensland (2003)
- Marie Curie Intra European Post Doctoral Fellow, University of Manchester (2004–2006)
- Honours in Geology, University College Dublin (1994–1998)
David Murphy’s research centers on geochemistry and geology, with a focus on igneous processes, early Earth evolution, crustal formation, and novel geochemical techniques. His work integrates field studies, laboratory analysis, and data science to understand planetary materials and tectonic histories. He also explores innovative applications in geoscience education, including the use of virtual reality for student learning.
The recent publications reveal a strong trend in isotope geochemistry, mantle dynamics, and continental crust evolution. His research spans diverse geological settings—from West Africa to Antarctica—and integrates advanced analytical methods such as U-Pb geochronology, isotopic tracing (Zn, Mg, Pb), and machine learning for image analysis. A growing interest in interdisciplinary approaches is evident in his work on VR in geology education.
David Murphy is a member of leading professional societies in the Earth sciences:
- American Geophysical Union (AGU)
- Geological Society of America (GSA)
He actively supervises research projects and contributes to grant-funded research in geochemistry and Earth evolution. His teaching includes core undergraduate units such as Chemical Earth: Geochemistry, Earth's Mineral Resources, and Dynamic Earth: Plate Tectonics. He previously taught Mineralogy and Petrology, reflecting his strong foundation in Earth materials.
Dr Murphy leads and collaborates on research initiatives involving volcanic systems, crustal xenoliths, lamprophyres, and greenstone belts. His work often involves international teams and utilizes advanced facilities for geochemical imaging and isotopic analysis.
