Sarah M. Giles is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Columbia University's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on ancient environmental evolution, carbonate geochemistry, and coastal geomorphology, utilizing advanced methods like isotopic chemostratigraphy and drone-mapping. She holds a Ph.D., M.Phil., and B.S. in Geology from Columbia University (2018–2024) and Texas A&M University (2014–2018).
Her work emphasizes collaborative projects to explore Ediacaran paleocanyons, salt diapirism, and the Shuram carbon isotope excursion. Notable contributions include studies on the Wonoka canyons and Johnnie valleys, linking tectonic and climatic processes to geological formations. Awards include the 2023 GSA Laubach Award and AAPG Atwater Grant.
Giles actively mentors students and advocates for innovative field methodologies, such as 3D outcrop modeling. Her research integrates sedimentological, structural, and geochemical analyses to unravel Earth's geological history.
