Dr. Cynthia M. Liutkus is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Appalachian State University’s College of Arts and Sciences. A sedimentologist and paleoenvironmental scientist, she specializes in reconstructing ancient environments using sedimentological and geochemical tools, with significant work at the Engare Sero Footprint Site in Tanzania.
- B.A., Bucknell University
- M.S., Rutgers University
- Ph.D., Rutgers University
Her research integrates siliciclastic and volcaniclastic deposit analysis in arid/semi-arid rift basins, focusing on paleosols, root carbonates, and stable isotopes to contextualize human evolution in Africa. She has led field expeditions to Tanzania, Kenya, and Namibia, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to climate, landscape, and taphonomic conditions.
Dr. Liutkus-Pierce’s recent publications highlight Neogene climate-tectonic interactions, Miocene ecosystem dynamics, and East African Rift paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Her work bridges geological and anthropological studies through sedimentary and isotopic analyses.
Scientific Awards:
- 2016: Appalachian Academy of Outstanding Teachers
- 2017: UNC Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award
- 2017: Explorers Club Fellow
- 2024-2025: AAPG Distinguished Lecturer
She mentors undergraduate researchers, integrating students into fieldwork and laboratory analyses. Her grants include National Geographic Society and Leakey Foundation support, and she advocates for global learning initiatives and diversity in geoscience education.
